Remember that time I made soft pretzels? They were good. They were really, really good.

Some of my friends had the genius idea to turn them into pretzel bites. And who doesn’t love finger food?!
So when I came across this recipe - pizza pretzel bites – it would not be an exaggeration to say that I squealed a little with delight and quickly informed John that I had to make them. Like now. And by “now”, I meant the upcoming weekend.
And I did.

And they were delicious!
These definitely require a bit of prep, but it’s so worth it. Again, not exaggerating. Continue reading Pizza Pretzel Bites

Oh yes I did.
Now I know I said that our New Year’s diets would begin in the new year (makes sense), but I baked these on December 31st. That’s not technically cheating, is it?
Technically, we ate bacon, egg, and cheese croissants for breakfast the two following mornings (okay, that’s definitely cheating), but we were just trying to use these up as quickly as possible so said diet could begin sooner. You’re following my logic, right?
Oh, whatever.
These were so worth the calories. My pants were beginning to fit a little loose anyway.
The obvious question: were they hard to make?
Hard? No, not really. Time consuming? A resounding yes.
There’s a lot of down time involved in making croissants. You spread the process out over two days, though, so it’s not that bad. Shall we? Continue reading Croissants

I realize that baking with yeast is not for everyone, but believe me when I say you can successfully make English muffins at home.

I’ve been eyeing this recipe for weeks. It’s a weird thing to crave, but I love English muffins. Perfect with butter and jam, even better with a fried egg and cheese. What’s not to like?
While the recipe looks long, most of the allotted time is spent waiting for the dough to rise (twice).
For those of you who are scared to work with yeast: do not be frightened. The good news? If you own a stand mixer, these will require very little work on your part. Continue reading English Muffins

Last weekend I had the good fortune of spending time with my closest grad school friends (Hi! I miss you already!). It was exactly what I needed. Catching up over bottles of wine, delicious food, more hugs than I can count. I’m incredibly lucky to have such wonderful people in my life that are such a short distance from NY.
While Northampton, MA has many fine food establishments — no really, for a small city, it’s not bad — one of my favorite local hangouts is The Dirty Truth. It’s a beer hall, and a good one at that, but given that I don’t drink beer, I refer to it as my favorite place for wine downtown. I’ll be posting about the a-mazing brunch I had there last Sunday, but for now, let me just tell you about their pretzels.
They are soft, they are dense, and they are huge. And covered with salt. Did I mention that? That would typically be my favorite part of a pretzel, but at Dirty (as I affectionately call it), the best part is the accompanying wasabi mustard dip. The menu description gives fair warning that this dip is h-o-t spicy, and it is fabulous.
As soon as I got back to the city, I decided I was going to try and recreate the pretzels and dip. After scouring the internet, I found a recipe that looked good, and off I went!

Happy belated Thanksgiving! I hope your day was filled with family, friends, and of course, an abundance of food.
Mine was wonderful, thanks for asking. I spent the majority of Wednesday and Thursday morning cooking with my mom, then consumed copious amounts of food as John and I devoured two holiday feasts (Thanksgiving lunch with my fam in the early afternoon, then a second helping of everything with John’s fam later that day). Ah, gluttony – now I understand why you’re a deadly sin. Let’s just say the turkey wasn’t the only thing stuffed.

Last Wednesday was not a good day. I was upset about a number of things, one of which involved getting my first NY parking ticket when I put money in the meter. I paid! I placed a quarter in the meter, ran into the store to grab some eggs, and when I came out approximately two minutes later, I had a bright orange envelope on my window.
And now I have to waste my time contesting a ticket that I’ll probably end up paying for anyway.
The Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah, was to begin that evening. While our guest list was small (read: John and I), I had every intention of making a delicious meal. Being sad and mopey, however, is a recipe for disaster.
I had to move on. I needed to get up off the couch, set up my mixer, snap a few photos, and make the best challah I’ve ever had in my life.
And ladies and gents, that’s exactly what I did.
